Aims
By the end of this course, the student should be able to orientate him/herself in the questions that theology faces when accounting for Jesus Christ's God.
Main themes
The course provides basic, fundamental knowledge of Christian monotheism and its trinitarian doctrine on the historical and doctrinal level.
Content and teaching methods
How are we to understand the mystery of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? How can theology address this? The God of Jesus is the God of Israel, the One God, faithful to His alliance. Does interpretation of the event of Jesus Christ, in necessitating development of the trinitarian doctrine, lead Christian theology to leave monotheism and break with its Jewish matrix? How can we think of a God who is the same from age to age based on His involvement in the history of the alliance, as full of contingency and surprise? In identifying the stages of development of trinitarian language, the course aims to indicate what is at stake in its relationship to the founding sermons, the role of philosophy and a consideration of the possibilities of language.
