Aims
The student will learn the Syriac alphabet and the different forms of its writing. He will know the morphology and syntactical structures of the grammar. At the end he will be capable to read simple texts in vocalized form.
Main themes
The main aim of the course is the knowledge of the principal grammatical structures (morphology and syntax) of the Syrian classical language (4th-8th C.). An historical introduction will be given to the history and "Sitz im Leben" of the Syrian language among its various speakers and communities in the Near East.
Content and teaching methods
The students will know how to read and to understand simple vocalized texts in Syriac. In the beginning they will learn the alphabet and the essential points of Syriac morphology and syntaxe. They will analyze pericopes of the Holy Scriptures and apply the grammar. The knowledge basic of another semitic language like Aramaic will help to understand Syriac language.

Prerequisite : none.
Evaluation : the examen is oral : preparation, analysis and translation of a Syriac text which has not been read during the course.
Teaching materials : Syriac grammars and dictionnaries.
