Aims

At the end of the course, the student will be able to read, translate and explain the grammar of Aramaic texts of the Bible (Esdras and Daniel).

Main themes

1. Study of the grammar and vocabulary of biblical Aramaic
2. Translation of and comments on a chapter of Esdras and Daniel

Content and teaching methods

The objective of the course is to give the students an introduction on the basic morphological and syntactic structures of the Aramaic language. Most of the 30 hours courses will be spent on the analysis of biblical texts of the Old Testament, extracts from the books of Esdras and Daniel. The students who beforehand have studied another semitic language (Hebrew, Syriac and so on) during at least one semester are entitled to follow the course. This course will not be an ex cathedra course : It will ask for active participation form the students.

Prerequisite : one semester study of another Semitic language
Evaluation : Translation and explanation of all the words of some verses of Esdras and Daniel.
