Aims

By the end of the course, the student should be able to: translate excerpts from a Classic Latin author into contemporary French, with the help of a dictionary if necessary; read cursive excerpts taken from a Classic work or from a corpus of texts studied beforehand. The student will also be able to give a basic synthesis describing the significant linguistic facts of Classic Latin and to put these into practice.

Main themes

Perceptible broadening of the basic vocabulary.
In-depth description of the significant facts of the phonological, morphological, and syntactical systems of Classic Latin from a double perspective, both historical and synchronic.
Various exercises requiring the active putting into practice of Classic Latin grammatical structures.
Guided readings, translations, and grammatical explanations of texts.

Content and teaching methods

During the cursory reading of an author or a corpus of Classic texts, this course puts into place and completes the progressively acquired grammatical knowledge. This knowledge is itself resituated in the more global perspective of the Latin linguistic system as it has historically evolved and in its synchronic functioning.
