Aims

To bring the student to discover several works of Greek literature through the translation of relatively long passages.

Main themes

The course comprises:
1. the establishment of a precise translation ;
2. a philological commentary, in the broad sense of the term ;
3. a literary commentary adapted to the type of work studied.
It is divided in the following way:
30 hours in the 1st semester, for students in CLAS 12 or on an equivalent level: these are dedicated to the study of an author of intermediary difficulty and presuppose individual study on the part of the student (home preparation of the translation and elaboration of a an individual synthesis).
22.5 hours in the 2nd semester, for all students with different levels of Greek. These are dedicated to accessible authors, adapted to a heterogeneous audience, and imply a greater guidance on the part of the lecturer.

Content and teaching methods

The study of the author is articulated around 3 axes:
1. a precise translation bringing to light all the lexical, grammatical, and stylistic particularities of the text;
2. a complete philological commentary (grammar, textual critique, formal aesthetic);
3. a historical and literary commentary (realia, …).

Prerequisites: a 1st semester course in "Ancient Languages."
Students will receive the translated text elaborated together during class hours.
