Aims
: In-depth study of contemporary theatre in Britain and the United States. The main objective is to initiate the students to contemporary theatrical language (including new techniques, and television and cinema adaptations) through the study of plays representative of the main trends and playwrights from the 1950s to the present day.
Main themes
Starting with the revolution caused in the 1950s by the the "Angry Young Men," an analysis of the language of contemporary playwrights, focusing in particular on the innovative, indeed experimental, nature of theatrical production from the 1960s to the present day. The course will be based on the study of the texts of the plays, as well as on audio-visual documents, which will enable students to examine specific aspects regarding the use of (new) directing techniques.
Content and teaching methods
After a brief historical introduction, the course, taught in English, will highlight three of the most representative aspects of British and American contemporary theatre : roots in tradition, social activism, commercialism. The course will examine the influence of theatrical tradition on the plays studied, as well as their reflection of contemporary British and American societies. As theatre is first and foremost a scenic art form, the course will also stress the performance aspect of the said works. It will furthermore be illustrated by audio-visual or other materials and by extensive as well as intensive class readings.
