Aims
· To present and analyze the history of the key concepts on which contemporary linguistic theories are based.
· To train the students to exercise their critical thinking when faced with the methodological and epistemological aspects of the main trends of contemporary linguistics.
Main themes
Basing the study on a diachronic progression, the course reviews the main currents of modern linguistics, highlighting the major contributions for a scientific reflection about Language and languages.
The proposed history of linguistics should not be seen as an encyclopedic accumulation of knowledge. The course favors the different relationships one can discern between linguistic schools that differ in their temporal and spatial situation. In particular, the course underlines the logic particular to the work of each of the contemporary linguistic schools.
