Aims
Detailed course on the history of music.
Main themes
From a historical perspective and based on listening and reading music scores, this course will go further into detail on subjects studied during the first two study years. Since besides musicologists, students coming from various horizons will attend the course, a particular emphasis will be put on the relations between music and literature, the arts and the evolution of ideas.
Content and teaching methods
Exercises, class work and initiation to musical palaeography, including the following subjects : - the Eastern origins of Western music (Middle East, Egypt, Palestine) ; - Greek and Roman music ; - Eastern rites ; - Ambrosian, Gallican, Mozarabic and Old-Roman rites ; - Gregorian chant ; - Court Lyrics ; - Polyphony from its origins till the end of the 16th century. ; - The music of the Reformation

A typed assignment will be required concerning one of the studied eras.
