Aims
Objectives :
- Acquire notions in history of music, from Antiquity till the 18th century.
- Be able to place and recognize the principal music forms and major styles.
- Knowledge of the key works of the history of music (till the 18th century).
-Be able to link the evolution of music, plastic arts, literature and the major trends of thought.
Main themes
The principal stages of history of music will be studied, illustrated by the analysis of key works, pointing out the transformations, and stylistic and aesthetic evolutions of the works. Special attention will be paid to placing the works studied in context.
Content and teaching methods
Classical division of the subject : music in Antiquity (particularly in Greece), Medieval period (transmission of Ancient achievements, constitution of the Gregorian repertoire), court lyricism, polyphony : ars antiqua, ars nova, Burgundian schools, the golden age of polyphony, basso continuo and the beginning of the Baroque era;
Method : lectures illustrated by music samples.
