Aims
Students will acquire a basic knowledge and learn how to identify and analyse the type, artistic trend, and date of a building.
They will learn how to use reference tools.
They will master part of the basic vocabulary
Main themes
Presentation of the evolution of architecture between 1500 and 1800, according to artistic trends: Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Classicism, Neo-Classicism, and by country: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, England. Civil, religious, and military architecture. The art of gardens.
Drawing of relations, critical analysis.
Emphasis is placed on architects and the theory of architecture.
Case studies: Saint-Peter of Rome, Versailles, gardens, etc.
Content and teaching methods
Chapter on the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque period, and Neo-Classicism, country by country, and by architect. Case studies on architects, gardens, relief models and architectural representation. Illustrated lectures. Folder of compulsory readings.

Pre-requisites: High school history course.
Assessment: Oral examination based on questions and images/pictures.
