Aims
Practical initiation to the conditions of document creation (field techniques, drawings, photography techniques) and initiation to the auxiliary sciences of writing.
Students will acquire the basic method and knowledge necessary to the creation of documents. They will learn where to find reference works for the auxiliary sciences.
Main themes
Contents:
- Object drawing and reports on archaeological excavation sites.
- Architectural reports (norms and codes in effect, conventions, types of reports).
- Use of documents in printing (clichés, similes, and four-colour printing; lines, insertion of texts and rasters/screens; manipulating texts by computer-interface with printing; layouts and their adaptation to the requirements of scientific objectivity and illustration).
Content and teaching methods
- Initiation to the creation and treatment of graphic documents
- Initiation to the so-called auxiliary and traditional sciences of history, with examples principally applied to archaeology and art history, and with some emphasis on textual palaeography.

Pre-requisites: Latin is not required
Assessment: Oral exam. Full written report (draft and final copy).
Course Materials: Practical reference guide. For palaeography, course notes exist in the form of 94 pages illustrated book. Relevant summaries will be given by the lecturer.
