Aims
General introduction to the study of art history. By the end of the course, the student should have acquired a basic knowledge of art historical orientations, sectors, methods, and resources for the period under study.
Main themes
II. Middle Ages, Modernity, Contemporary Era. Historiography of art history: introduction to the history of the discipline from the Renaissance till the present day in order to uncover the main research orientations of the past and the present. Presentation of different theories and sciences of art, as well as the main international institutions (academies, museums, etc.) and the research tools these provide for the art historian.
Content and teaching methods
General introduction to research in art history for the following periods: the Middle Ages, Modernity, and the Contemporary Era. Historiography and heuristics. Overview of the national and international organization of present-day research.
