Processing of personal data

The Linguistic Society of Belgium collects personal data such as name, institution, academic position, affiliation, email address, corresponding address, personal website, research interests and information concerning your annual membership fee (amount paid and year of payment). These data are published on our website to facilitate contact between linguists in Belgium.

Information such as your full name, affiliation and professional contact details (address, e-mail, telephone number) collected through our membership form will be publicly displayed in our membership directory. Your personal details (address, e-mail, telephone number) will under no circumstances be published on the site. No personal financial information is retained by the LSB, as all financial transactions are conducted through the member’s bank.

When your membership has expired, and without payment of your membership fee for the current year, we will remove your data from our public directory on the website but keep a copy of them in a secure database, accessible to Board members in the context of their activities in the service of the Association. Your email address will remain encoded in our mailing list system until expressly revoked (cf. below).

Data collection methods

Personal information and data can be collected or processed in via forms to fill out in order to access certain services on our site.

Some personal information may be collected to optimise site operation. A cookie is a small file sent by our servers and saved on your computer. Cookies are used, for example, to facilitate your navigation, retain your preferences, and make interaction between you and Internet servers quicker and easier. Cookies are also used to statistically analyse your navigation while maintaining the anonymity of your navigation data.

Personal information and data that may be collected while visiting the site include:

  • the Internet domain from which you access the site;
  • the IP address of the computer you use to access the site;
  • information concerning pages you consult on the site and the last actions carried out therein;
  • any other information you provide voluntarily, for example as when filling forms on our site (membership form, contact form, mailing list, etc.) and send a message to our mailing list.

To promote their content, certain pages of this site use third-party services such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo. These third-party sites use cookies that are under their sole responsibility.

Personal data processing and purposes

We use the information collected in this way for the following purposes: contact, directory of researchers, newsletter management, sending of the Belgian Journal of Linguistics (if you have requested it).

The LSB cares about protecting your personal information and has therefore implemented information and privacy protection measures that comply with current regulations. In general, the information and data collected will not be transferred or transmitted to any other organisation. However, we reserve the right to disclose Personal Information as required by law.

Safety and security

We are committed to maintaining a high level of confidentiality. However, since no single mechanism provides maximum security, there is always some risk when using the Internet to transmit personal information.

The website of the Linguistic Society of Belgium and the members database used by the Board are hosted on servers managed by UCLouvain (Belgium). The mailing list service is hosted on servers managed by UAntwerp (Belgium). Both universities take the best possible security measures to prevent third parties from misusing your personal data.

The LSB board is the Data Controller for the Association. The Data Control Leads are the President, Vice-president, Secretary, Webmaster and Treasurer of the Association.

Rights of access and rectification

In accordance with current legislation, you have the right to access your personal information and data as well as the right to rectify any discrepancies. 

Data can be removed from either publication on the website or from the database entirely by sending a request to the webmaster. Concerning the mailing list, you can manage your subscription on the dedicated platform.
