Another mixed case: Deep and surface properties of the Dutch dat doen-anaphor

The Dutch VP-anaphor dat doen ‘do that’ (henceforth the DDA) has properties of both a deep and a surface anaphor, according to the distinction made by Hankamer and Sag (1976). Most types of subextraction are disallowed out of the DDA, sug- gesting that it is a deep anaphor. However, unaccusative and comparative movement is allowed out of the DDA, suggesting it is a surface anaphor; The DDA is thus one of the many ex- amples of anaphors that do not neatly fall into the distinction by Hankamer and Sag (1976).

Contrast Pairs in Orchestra Instruction as a Window into the Multimodal Expression of Stance

On the background of the increased interest in the phenomenon of stance- taking (i.a. Englebretson 2007, Debras 2015) this contribution explores the notion of contrast pairs (Weeks 1996, Messner 2020) as it is instantiated in orchestra instruction during rehearsal, an inherently stance-laden activity given its focus on evaluating and improving the musicians’ collective performance. Contrast pairs are sequences of closely juxtaposed depictions (Clark 2016, or “illustrative expressions” in Weeks 1996), which serve the instructional comparison of undesired and desired (orchestral) performances. In this contribution, we report on an exploratory analysis of a corpus of approximately ten hours of video recordings of orchestra rehearsals (Schrooten & Feyaerts 2020). Through a close reading of two examples, we shed light on the sequential and multimodal complexity of contrast pairs and identify steps for further analysis. We argue that, due to their evaluative and contrastive nature, contrast pairs offer valuable grounds to contribute to the study of multimodal stance-taking in interaction.

Insubordinate hypothetical manner constructions in French and Spanish: A pilot study

This paper presents a pilot study of insubordinate hypothetical manner constructions (‘as if’) in French (comme si) and Spanish (como si). On the basis of the theoretical framework provided by Evans (2007) and Olguín-Martínez (2021), we analyse data from both written and spoken corpora and we propose a four-way constructional typology that establishes the different meanings such constructions can express and the discourse functions they can serve, and links these to patterns of tense-aspect-mood marking. Thus, we move beyond previous findings and add three more construction types to Brinton’s (2014) denial of an assumption type: a nuanced agreement type that serves the discourse function of expressing partial agreement with some preceding discourse; a discursive elaboration or reformulation type in which the speaker fully agrees with the preceding discourse and only reformulates or adds new information to it; and a scalar evaluation type, which belongs to the evaluative-attitudinal domain and shows distinct formal characteristics (only type found to show indicative mood + present tense TAM marking in Spanish).

Schakeringspartikels als vertaalprobleem voor Vlamingen die Duits leren

Deze paper presenteert de voorlopige resultaten van een studie naar hoe Vlaamse leerders van het Duits omgaan met schakeringspartikels in een Duitse tekst. 43 deelnemers die nog geen expliciete instructie over schakeringspartikels hadden gekregen, werd gevraagd een tekstfragment met schakeringspartikels uit het Duits naar het Nederlands te vertalen. Het aantal keren dat een partikel passend vertaald wordt, blijkt sterk te verschillen naargelang het partikel. Dit heeft er onder meer mee te maken of het partikel in kwestie een directe Nederlandse tegenhanger heeft, maar ook het heterosemiebewustzijn bij de leerders (of veeleer het gebrek daaraan) lijkt een rol te spelen.

Print media question-answer interviews in the Dutch-speaking press in Belgium show a formal characteristic which is not widely spread in other languages: in the interviewee’s answers, often side comments made by the interviewer are incorporated between brackets. These comments are forms of metadiscourse (Hyland 2019) and we can consider them to be ‘asides’ in the sense Goffman (1981) assigned to the term. This study describes the different forms these asides take in question-answer interviews in two Flemish popular magazines and analyzes their discursive functions. Interviewers who integrate asides in their texts, stage themselves and the readers as participants in the conversation. The analysis of the asides shows that written interviews should be considered as a form of discourse in which three participating parties are involved and in which communication in different directions takes place, rather than as an account in written form of a conversation between interviewer and interviewee.

The story of -š/-iš: the comparative in Ukrainian

The comparative suffix in Ukrainian seemingly has four al- lomorphs: the productive form -iš, and the non-productive forms -š, -č, and -šč. This paper is based on a claim by Bevzenko (1960) that the suffixes -č and -šč are derived from -š, being a result of assimilative- dissimilative changes. As a result, the number of suffixes can be re- duced to two, namely -š and -iš. I will show that the distribution of these two suffixes in Ukrainian is not regulated by phonology.

Avec mais, fais ce qu’il te plaît. Une étude descriptive et contrastive de mais en français et maar en néerlandais

Cette étude se penche sur les profils fonctionnels de la paire de connecteurs mais et maar qui émergent lorsque l’on adopte une vision sémantique tridimensionnelle de ces connecteurs inspirée d’une conception de la notion d’opposition reposant sur trois sous-notions oppositives, à savoir la concession, l’adversation, et la rectification. Quatre critères ont été pris en compte : la nature des unités que mais et maar unissent, les positions qu’ils y occupent, leurs longueurs (moyennes et variances), et les séquences de connecteurs dans lesquelles mais et maar peuvent figurer. Les résultats des analyses de ces critères montrent des tendances majoritairement communes entre le français et le néerlandais. Les propriétés des mais et maar concessifs se distinguent ainsi systématiquement de celles des mais et maar rectificatifs, tandis que celles des mais et maar adversatifs leur sont intermédiaires, plus proches, tantôt, de la concession (par la nature des unités unies et les moyennes de leurs longueurs), tantôt de la rectification (par leurs positions et l’homogénéité des longueurs des unités unies). Mais et maar se différencient principalement dans les résultats du dernier critère d’analyse de cette étude, par les différentes probabilités qu’ils ont à se rencontrer au sein de séquences de connecteurs en fonction de leur catégorie sémantique.
