Le tronc commun comprend des cours consacrés à des fondements caractéristiques de l’anthropologie louvaniste, à des « problématiques théoriques transversales », à des cours d'apport pluridisciplinaire et la chaire Leclercq où des conférenciers de renom présentent leurs travaux de recherche et enfin un important ensemble de cours et séminaires en « pratique de recherche ». Il rassemble des enseignements de méthodologie encadrant l’enquête de terrain de chaque étudiant et l’accompagnement à la rédaction de la monographie. C’est dans cette perspective que chaque étudiant réalisera un véritable terrain ethnographique, sur des espaces lointains ou proches.
