Master in Religious Sciences [120.0]

AnnéesTravail de fin d'étude

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The interdisciplinary approach of religions through humanities and social sciences is the main originality of this master program. More than a single historical perspective, a dynamical approach focuses on religions within contemporary western societies, as crucial challenges for these societies.  In particular, the legal component of the program ensures an innovative approach of trans-disciplinarity and interculturality as well.

The program is dedicated to students interested in an objective knowledge of religions and a critical approach provided by social sciences. The aim of the program is to enable the student to study at least two important religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Eastern Religions) and to acquire keys of comprehension forged by the social sciences (philosophy, history, law, sociology, psychology, theology). The formation largely requires a personal investment of the student while ensuring the conditions for an autonomous work.

The main priority of the master in sciences of religions is the acquisition of methods of analysis and theorization. It prepares students to personal researches about religions and their scientific approach. It also contributes to build various competences related in particular to the field of intercultural and interreligious mediation. It gives access to doctoral researches.

Retour en début de pageGeneral presentation of the programme

The common core program is composed of required substantial introductions to social sciences approaches of the religious phenomenon as well as a seminar of heuristics and two interdisciplinary seminars (methodology and cross-thematic question). The remaining part of the curriculum is dedicated to the study of at least two religious traditions. The program requires the submission of a master thesis.

A specialized option has to be chosen out of four provided by the program  : - study of religious traditions - socio-anthropology of religion - psychology of religion - law and religion. Some pre-requisits may be mandatory for students with no previous curricula about the chosen field or discipline.

Important Notice:

The individual program of each student depends on her former curriculum and her optional choice as regards with religion thematics and/or disciplinary approaches; A large number of varied optional courses is offered to meet the interests of each student. The Master program requires completing a minimum of 120 credits distributed over two years, corresponding to 60 credits each one.

Wathever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall totalise 120 credits, spread over two years of studies each of 60 credits

Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

Interdisciplinarity is at the very heart of the programme, where religions (at least two) are always thought of in direct association with philosophy, socio-anthropology, psychology, law and theology.
The core course activities provide an introduction to methodology in each of the main disciplines covered by the term 'sciences des religions', the chance to learn a pluridisciplinary method of analysis of religious facts in two seminars led by a team of teachers, which is itself pluridisciplinary. By anchoring religious questions in highly contemporary problems, the course allows students to conduct case studies, and approach issues on a problem-by-problem basis, which involves combining varied types of knowledge and skills, etc.
By choosing one of the 4 courses of study in the research focus, the student can focus on one discipline (religious studies, human sciences, law), in order to gain real expertise in the field as well as the standard of knowledge and skills required to consider embarking on doctoral research.
This Master's programme is unique in French-speaking Belgium in its capacity to bring together the various strands of human sciences in its approach to the religious phenomenon, less in its historical dimension (which, of course, is not excluded) than in the crucial questions that it currently puts to western society. The legal part of the programme in particular provides an approach which is as fundamental as it is innovative.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The modes of evaluation are laid out in the syllabus for each activity. Roughly speaking, students are evaluated by written work with formative evaluation or oral exams.

Mobility and/or internationalisation
At the Master's stage, Erasmus exchanges will be encouraged. At regional level, it is possible to select activities in the programmes of the Facultés universitaires Saint- Louis - FUSL, the Académie Louvain, the Université Libre de Bruxelles - ULB (Institut des religions et de la laïcité), the Université de Liège - ULg, the ICHEC Brussels Management School - and the KULeuven.

UCL's faculty of theology is developing a partnership at Master's level with the theology faculties (Protestant and Catholic) from Strasbourg's Université Marc Bloch where the study of religion is granted special attention; it is possible to extend this partnership where religious sciences are concerned. Other partnerships have been developed by the faculties and departments associated with this Master, from which students of religious sciences can benefit.

Internationalisation
At a national levelmaster courses may be chosen out the programs of the Free University Brussels (ULB - Institute of religions and secularism), Liège State University (Ulg), ICHEC -Brussels Management School - and the KULeuven (up to 20 credits).
European Erasmus exchanges are promoted within the framework of the master in Religious Sciences. The Faculty of Theology (UCLouvain) has organized a partnership with the Protestant and Catholic Faculties of Theology of the University of Strasbourg, where the study of religions is of special interest. An extension of this partnership is possible with regard to Religious Studies. Other partnerships are organized by the associated  faculties. Student in Religious Studies may take benefit of all of them.
