Master in Business engineering [120.0] - INGE2M

The Master in Business Engineering is a two-year management programme which is designed to strengthen the management skills of students who have already gained a first qualification in science and technology. It is designed to provide them with the skills and knowledge which will enable them to fully understand the complex and varied issues that companies in the knowledge economy have to face. They also have the possibility of specializing in functional or cross-disciplinary areas of management as well as preparing for doctoral level research.

Against this background, the Master in Business Engineering places special emphasis on the development of skills which will enable students to :

1.      model and formalize problems and management situations with a view to finding solutions and improvements (management science ;
2.      in the industrial world, to make use of technological processes and be able to manage them ;
3.      to understand the complexity of the issues facing innovative businesses and be able to manage them ;
4.      to make use of technology and innovation in ‘socially responsible’ management techniques.

In the same way as other students of the Louvain School of Management, prospective Masters in Business Engineering will :

1.      have the general knowledge that any business should expect from a management student ;2.      demonstrate initiative and independence in decision-taking (with teaching methods geared to problem resolution) ;
3.      have practical experience of business (through the work placement and classes with many entrepreneurs and managers) ;
4.      have developed the ability to work in an international environment ;
5.      will be familiar with team work.

The Business Engineering programme is made up of courses with a professional focus, special subjects or courses, an exchange programme as well as a thesis, an internship and compulsory courses from the core subjects of the programme. During the first year, students attend courses linked to the professional or research focus and to the specialized option courses. The exchange and the core subjects are done in the second year.

In the first year, students first choose a professional focus worth 30 credits that will develop skills in management functions. There is a group of courses on project management and technological innovation.  

Students must also choose two options of 15 credits each in the same special subject which will enable them to specialize in a cross-disciplinary or functional area. Certain options are taught in English (EN), others partly in English and in French (EN/FR). Certain special subjects are available at the Louvain-la-Neuve campus whilst others are at Mons and Namur campus. Students who do not wish to specialize will only be able to choose from the basic option courses from each special subject of the Louvain School of Management (LLN-Mons-Namur).

Among the special subjects available at Louvain-la-Neuve from which the student can choose are : Innovation (EN/FR), Environmental Management (FR), Supply Chain Management (EN), Corporate Finance (EN/FR), Strategic Marketing (EN/FR) and Entrepreneurship (EN/FR).
UCL students from the LSM may also take advantage of the additional option courses available at the School’s partner universities : Service Management (FUNDP-Namur), Information Systems Management (FUNDP-Namur),   Finance (FUNDP-Namur), Operational Marketing (FUNDP-Namur) , Portfolio Management (FUCaM-Mons), Advanced Approaches and Methods in Marketing (FUCaM-Mons).

During the second year, students may 

- participate in an exchange programme worth 30 credits to pursue their specialization.
- after selection,   finish   off their training by gaining the CEMS-MIM degree (Master in International Management),
- spend a whole year at one of our partner universities and gaining a “double degree" (KULeuven, Universität zu Köln, Helsinki School of Economics, Fundaçao Getulio Vargas, Brazil.)
- participate in the programme IBE (International Business Expatriate) which consists of spending 6 months abroad for an internship.

Students must also take 30 credits to:

• a project dissertation related to the specialization;  either a project dissertation enabling the student to make a contribution to the solution of a real problem which occurs or could occur in one or more organizations (see www.uclouvain.be/8155.html for further information), or a research dissertation for the research focus;
• an internship. This may or may not be linked to the dissertation;
• a course of corporate social responsibility
• a seminar on current economic and management issues.
