The "basic training" in this programme takes 2 years. There is an examination each year. Entry to the second year of study is dependent on the satisfactory completion of all first year of study.

The basic training in biological analysis is comprehensive : it includes teaching of the theory and practice completed by placements in each of the three fields of clinical biology: medical chemistry (including hormonology, toxicology and therapeutic monitoring), microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and virology) and haematology (including coagulation). The use of immunology and radio-isotopes in these three fields are also included.

Additional training in human biology is also included in these two years of study.

Candidates will be required to attend or participate in learning and scientific activities, as required by the Committee.

During their studies, candidates will have to do duty activities.

During the full time placements in the three fields of clinical biology lasting a minimum of 6 months each, theoretical and practical training is undertaken at the same time. The division during the first two years is outlined below.

In addition to the basic training, students undergo three years of placement corresponding to the "advanced training" in the annexe of the Royal Decree of 3-9-84. They must be under the direction of placement supervisors approved by the Ministry of Public Health and in sections approved for placements. All placements are overseen by the programme committee for clinical biology at the School of Pharmacy. The advanced training will be devoted for a period of three years to either :

  • one of the three fields of clinical biology;
  • a combination of two or three fields of clinical biology, providing that advanced training in each of these branches is not less than one year.
