The seminar focused on specific problems of interpretation in relation to the use of archaeological sources for the reconstruction of social and political relationships during the Iron Age and historical periods (Italy and Roman provinces) too.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Advancedtraining for students who want to specialize in archeology of the Italian peninsula and Roman provinces.
The aim is todevelop a discerning approach and analytical methods to study the classical world (material culture, architecture, sculpture and painting etc.).
Application of theoretical and anthropological concepts in archaeological interpretation.
 
Content
In 2020-2021, the seminar will be focused on the ancient city of Ostia, harbour of Rome. Several aspects of the site will be analyzed, as the architecture, the town planning, decorative elements (paintings, mosaics, sculpture, marble decorations), the geomorphology and the history of a crucial site for the knowledge of Roman civilization.
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

The course is structured in a series of lectures alternated with seminar sessions around specific issues, decided at the beginning of the seminar. Supplementary activities may be added, varying from year to year: students may be asked to attend lectures and conferences and to submit a critical report; an excursion may also be planned, with personal research followed by an oral presentation on a city or a monument of Antiquity. It can also take the form of an in-depth analysis of scientific papers on a specific topic with presentation (PPT) by the students.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Evaluation method: essay to submit (60% of the points) with oral presentation (30% of the points) + continuous assessment during the seminars (10% of the points).
Aims: Advanced training for students who want to specialize in the archaeology of the Roman world. The goal is to develop a critical sense and analytical methodology in the study of the classical world (material culture, architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), to develop theoretical and anthropological concepts in archaeological interpretation but also to be use, through a practical case of study, the methods of geoarcheology, archeometry and digital archeology.
