Main themes
The physical and palaeo-anthropology section of the course discusses problematic issues relative to human remains from the archeological sites.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 The aim is to give to archeologists the necessary knowledge to manage and to interpret human remains in collaboration with anthropologist.
 
Content
Methods to conserve, to describe and to measure (fragments of) human skeletons will be discussed both in theory and in practice. On this basis, the interpretation of the results will be considered to understand the characters retained in a variety of environments and climates. Human evolution will be explained to show the cognitive new abilities recognized in the archeological material and deduced from some emerging characters.

Introduction to the differentiation of types of burials and to the analysis of the state and position of  bones in order to understand funeral practices and provide information on the living practices of populations in the past.

Evaluation methods
The evaluation of the first part of the course (lecturer: S. Villotte) will be based on a Multiple Choice Questionnaire (in Moodle) concentrating on themes treated in class. The evaluation of the second part (lecturer: S. Déderix) will take the form of a written text and specifically consist of a commentary to be made on a series of scientific papers selected by the teacher and concerning themes treated during the classes.
