Content
Humanitarian Reason (2018-2019, Q2)
The moral face of the contemporary world is largely shaped by the presence of humanitarian action helping the victims of all sorts of catastrophes: natural disasters, epidemies, civil wars, persecution and so on. In all these cases, humanitarian aid is evident, but it sometimes must justify its courageous choice because it is challenged by sceptics or cynics. What do we owe to persons in need? How can we define priorities and limits of obligations? The seminar will be a laboratory of research on fundamental and on practical questions linked to the “humanitarian reason” (Didier Fassin). The program will depend on specific interests and research projects of the participants.
Teaching methods
A seminar is not a series of lectures. It will focus on the dynamics of individual and collective research.
Evaluation methods
A regular and active participation is necessary.
After a general introduction to the seminar, participants will choose their topic for an oral presentation. This presentation serves as the starting point for the written paper to be evaluated in June. There is no oral exam.
The seminar is open to interested  people with an interdisciplinary perspective (master or PhD  level) coming from philosophy, theology, religious studies, social and political sciences, etc.
