Main themes
This seminar deals with following issues:
1. an introduction to the history, sources and methods of papyrology;
2. a study of papyrological documents and textual traditions embedded in Classical (Greek and Latin) and Oriental (Egyptian, Coptic, Arabic) cultures.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 At the end of this seminar, students will be able to:
1. identify and analyse a papyrological text, and to contextualize it.
2. edit and study papyri in a comprehensive and relevant way (lemma, transcription, restitution, translation, dating, commentary).
3. correctly use bibliography and working tools.

Content
After an introduction to the production and uses of the papyrus from the age of the Ptolemies to late antiquity, the student will be trained in the principal work tools that are relevant to papyrology (text corpuses, dictionaries, manuals, scientific journals and collections, International congresses) and also in the history of this scientific discipline.
The major part of this seminar is devoted to the reading and commentary (philological, historical and archaeological) of documentary and literary papyri embedded in Classical (Greek and Latin), as well as Oriental (Egyptian, Coptic, Arabic) cultures.
Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures and personal work.
Evaluation methods
Essay and oral exam.
