This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation :

Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit

On completing this unit the student is able to:

·         Define different types of corpus;

·         Effectively utilise monolingual and bilingual corpora available online in the context of a translation or terminology project;

·         Recognise the benefits and limits of corpora and of the search functions of corpora available online;

·         Select documents to constitute a corpus for the completion of a translation or terminology project;

·         Assess the quality of the documents selected;

·         Classify the documents selected according to a series of criteria covered in the course;

·         Effectively use concordancers ;

·         Extract the information useful to a translation or terminology project from a corpus with the aid of a concordancer.

Evaluation methods

Paper to be submitted at the end of term and oral exam in January.

Content

The Corpus Analysis Methodology in Translatology and Terminology course will cover the following points: 1) corpus: definition; 2) the different types of corpora; 3) corpus design; 4) corpus compilation; 5) the corpus and the professional translator; 6) the concordancer: the corpus search tool; 7) the corpus and the terminologist. The lectures will be extended by practical exercises in the computer lab on the design, compilation and querying of corpora in the context of a translation or terminology project.
