Prerequisites

An elementary knowledge of classical and modern Chinese.

Main themes

This course treats the following themes:

- the use of grammars and dictionaries of classical Chinese;
- a mastery of grammatical structures (morphology and syntax);
- the translation of literary texts.

Aims

In-depth study of classical Chinese.

At the end of this course, the student will be capable to translate texts of average or advanced difficulty level, and to understand them in the framework of the historical, philosophical-religious, social and cultural context of ancient China. In order to achieve this goal, he will have acquired a mastery of the grammar of classical Chinese and the aptitude for using the principal linguistic tools (grammars, dictionaries).

Evaluation methods

Oral exam based on previous written preparation.

Content

By means of extracts from the principal philosophical texts (Confucian, Taoist, Mohist, legal), the principal historical texts, the principal Buddhist texts (translated from Sanskrit) and the principal poetic texts of ancient China, the basic structures of classical Chinese will be analysed in detail. The texts will be placed in their historical, philosophical-religious, social and cultural context.
