Mastery of Greek grammar, prosody and metrics, and introduction to the study of Greek dialects.
This course deals with the following themes:
1. Phonetics and phonology of Ancient Greek;
2. Greek prosody and metre;
3. The main Greek dialects, the epic dialect of Homer, and the Koine;
4. Personal translation of Greek epic poetry and of a text in Koine Greek (cursory reading).
At the end of the course, the student will be capable to translate from French into Greek at an advanced level, as well to translate and analyse Greek poetical texts. To achieve this goal, he will have mastered Greek phonetics, the basic rules of Greek prosody and metrics (including scanning Greek poetry). He will be familiar with the principal Greek dialects, the epic dialect of Homer, and the Koine.

The final exam includes a written part an oral part, and evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including Greek composition and translation, and the scansion of poetical texts).
Lectures coupled with exercises (translation and composition).
The course is structured as follows:
1. Study of Greek phonetics and phonology;
2. Study of the basic rules of Greek prosody and metre;
3. Study of the principal Greek dialects, of the epic dialect of Homer, and of the Koine;
4. Greek prose composition (translation from French into Greek);
5. Private translation of a poetical text (cursory reading: Iliad: Book 24) and of a text in the Koine (cursory reading: the first 10 chapters of the Gospel of Luke.
