Specific issues relating to medieval and modern archaeology

The course introduces specific questions about the medieval and early modern archaeological sources, within the european economic, geographical and social frameworks. Examples more specifically deal with the Low Countries between the XIth and the XVIth cent.

Specialised course for people studying NW european archaeology, medieval art historians and historians who wish to develop their knowledge of the archaeological sources in North West Europe, especially in the former Low Countries.

Oral individual examination added to a written report based on a portfolio.

Ex cathedra lecturing including guest lectures ; field, museums and exhibition trips may be linked with several topics of the course (urban and rural archaeology).

The course offers an overview of the material culture through the medieval until the early medieval period, mainly but not exclusively in the former Low Countries. The main topics considered are linked with the urban archaeological ressources, the rural settlements and the paleoenvironment, the craft productions and the economical networks, the social interpretation of the material culture.

Bibliography is delivered during the semester.
