The course will focus on an analysis of the work of twenty or so major directors, drawing each time on one or more specific productions: the history of production before 1914 (Antoine, Stanislavski, Craig); new directions in the interwar period in Germany (Jessner, Piscator, Brecht), the USSR (Meyerhold, Vakhtangov, Taïrov) and France (Copeau, le Cartel, Artaud); the brilliance of popular theatre, its uncertainties and the search for new ways of relating with the public (Vilar, Strehler, Planchon, Brook, Grotowski, Mnouchkine, Chéreau, Vitez, etc.).
