Increasing demands in lightweight construction and e-mobility require an increase in formable tailor welded blanks. Friction Stir Welding offers the option to provide multi material TWBs with exceptional weld seam quality. Such parts already find widespread industrial use, but this far not in forming intensive applications. This projects aims at developing material based methods of determining parameter windows developed not for maximum tensile strength, but maximum forming abilities, enabling material and weight savings. The presentation will provide insight into the methods of developing formable multi material Friction Stir Weld seams of Aluminum Steel Joints, as well as Aluminum Copper Joints used in electrical power systems.
