Distortions prediction for AA2XXX friction stir welding
By RĂ©mi Bertrand (Univ Lyon, France/ ETS, Canada), Eric Feulvarch (Univ Lyon, France), Philippe Bocher (ETS, Canada)

A method for simulating the distortions in friction stir welding induced by thermal deformation is proposed. It consist of a coupling between a transitional Rigid-ALE finite element approach, to calculate the transitional heat transfer directly from the kinematic parameters of the process, and a simple distortion model where calculated heat transfer is projected. The Rigid-ALE approach is a transient extension of the stationary thermal model proposed by Robe et al. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijmecsci.2019.02.029). Once the thermal of the process calculated, the corresponding thermal deformations are determined and the resulting distortions are obtained by a thermo-elastoplastic calculation. In this study, a case of friction stir welding of thin sheets of aluminum alloys 2XXX is treated.
