FSW manufacturing by a machining sub-contractor: real case and challenge
By Alain Lozach (CALIP GROUP), William Fauveau (CALIP GROUP)
Since the 80s, the plants of CALIP in Normandy produce aluminum parts from die-cast, extrusion and billet alloys. For 3 years now we have integrated an FSW head to mount on our existing CNC machine which allows us to make >7m welding. We will present several cases where FSW solutions were investigated.
Firstly, our quick win, where we offered to a customer to shift from an all machining solution to an FSW assembly, reducing the "buy to fly" ratio.
Afterwards, we will present you two cases of thermal exchangers: One where FSW was in competition with a 3D printed solution, for a thermal exchanger in a motor sport application. The other one where we offered to the customer to substitute a screw fastened cover by an FSW solution for the aeronautic field.
Finally, we will compare two types of electronic support. One case is a thin metal sheet product, and the second a row block operation.
To conclude we will present you our vision of the raising dynamic of the market and the hard point that we meet to make the technology accepted by the market.
