Aims

To make students aware of geopolitical and geo-economic factors in present-day conflicts, and to provide them with the analytical instruments they need to make apparently complex conflicts intelligible.

Content and teaching methods

Content
The course will seek to examine the most important conflicts in areas close to the EU, and particularly conflicts in the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Methodology
Work in sub-groups, a collective presentation of work, and discussion in the form of a seminar.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Assessment: This will be based on the oral presentation and summarised reports.
Reading will focus on books of general interest (conflicts) and regional geopolitical analyses (e.g. the geopolitics of the Mediterranean, and the geopolitics of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Central Asia and the Balkans).
