Aims
This course is intended to extend students' knowledge of the history of Music from Antiquity up to the end of the 19th century. They will be trained to recognize the musical forms and major styles of this period. They will also be expected to know the major works of musical history up to the end of the 19th century.
Main themes
Key moments in musical history (excluding the 20th century) will be studied in detail, particularly through listening to the major works in the repertoire and analyzing the scores for their chief characteristics.
Content and teaching methods
The course divides up the history of Music along traditional chronological lines. It highlights those composers and works judged by the lecturer to be the most important. The course content may vary from one year to another.
