Aims

In-depth study of the way different EC and EU policies fit into a larger corpus of international relations governed by the rule of law. The purpose is thus to present the law of external relations of the European Community and the European Union in a general and consistent way.

Main themes

The first part of the course addresses basic concepts: legal personality of the EC and the EU, treaty-making power and competences, and common foreign and security policy. The second part is dedicated to certain EC and EU policies having a specific international dimension: external trade policy (customs policy and common commercial policy), association and cooperation policies, sanctions by the EC and the EU against non-member States, and military aspects of the CFSP.

Content and teaching methods

The lecture offers students the structural elements needed for an understanding of concepts and practice. It requires from them active participation in line with their level of study.
