Aims

The course will enable students to carry out a politico historical and geo political
analysis of central and eastern Europe.

Main themes

The activity aims to provide the intellectual instruments needed to:
define the politico geographical entity known as 'central and eastern Europe';
teach the (geo )political development of the region in the 20th century;
carry out applied geo political studies (case studies linked to problems of minorities
and frontier disputes);
position the region in relation to (pan )European organisations.

Content and teaching methods

Content
Through an expression of the defined objectives and course specifications, the exact
content of this course will largely be based on the contributions of outside speakers.
Methodology
The course will alternate between lectures including the projection of visual data and
Discussion sessions based on reading materials. Targeted themes, and talks given by outside
lecturers. The course will be linked to activities at UCL of the Interbrew Baillet Latour Chair in 'European Union-Russia', the current incumbent being the Coordinator of this course.

Courses IDRI2108 (Geo politics) and IDRI2110 (International relations from 1815 to the
present day).
Choice of an oral or a written examination. In addition the compulsory examination, there
may be optional work on a question linked to the course. but not yet developed within it.
