Aims

At the end of this course students will have been taught the history of Wallonia in its most significant aspects : cultural, social, economic and institutional.

Main themes

After an introduction on the relevance of a course on the history of Wallonia, several expositions present the country and its people in ancient times, before dealing with more recent questions. Several lectures complete the panorama : social and economic questions, the arts - including music, the dialects. Concentrating on the emergence of Wallonia in the19th and 20th centuries, the course nonetheless provides a synthetic vision of the country and people in earlier times.

Content and teaching methods

The course concentrates especially on the modern and contemporary periods, but includes a lecture on Wallonia in the medieval period. Following an introduction touching on the course's focus and providing the general bibliography, it pays special attention to political structures and mentalities, settlement and land development, economy, thought, religious life, literature, language, the arts and sciences, social and "community problems". Particular attention is paid to the birth and origins of Walloon consciousness. Instruction is entrusted to a group of co-teachers, one the co-ordinator. Course notes are placed at students' disposal.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Evaluation : Method of examination : The student passes an oral examination with the instructor designated as responsible (if the principle of co- teaching is maintained).
