Aims

Students should have acquired skills in three areas by the end of the courses GLOR 1431-1432 :
1) an ability to describe the key issues, major periods and general orientations in the history of Latin literature ;
2) an ability to summarise and present key works of Latin literature which will have been read in translation ;
3) a method of elucidating, researching and presenting references to ancient sources of Latin literature, including the works of minor authors.

Main themes

The general study of "Latin Literature" is divided into two alternating complementary courses (GLOR 1431 and 1432). The lectures cover a variety of topics and chapters in Latin literature in the form of summaries drawn up by the lecturer. These are supplemented with a self-study component based on a manual of the history of Latin literature and a selection of texts in translation, technical exercises for researching library references and an oral and written presentation of a research dossier drawn up by students on an issue in Latin literature. This work will be spread out over the two years of BAC 2 and 3.

Content and teaching methods

The lecture course covers a variety of topics in the history of Latin literature and is intended not to draw up a catalogue of Latin authors or works, but to introduce students to issues in the history of Latin literature, to notions of literary generation, aesthetics and composition. The topic of one of the lectures will be to define the material, cultural and aesthetic conditions governing Latin literature.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Course entry requirements: none.
Evaluation: continuous assessment throughout the term (3 tests); evaluation certified by an oral examination at the end of the course.
Course material: Students are expected to obtain a manual of Latin literature. Precise references will be given at the beginning of the course.
