Aims

By the end of this course, the student will have a deeper understanding of a major text on, or problem of, metaphysics. The student should be able to present, analyze, and discuss the text/problem in a critical and well-argued manner.

Main themes

The aim of the course is to lead the students to a deeper understanding of an important metaphysical problem and thus allow them to grasp what issues are at stake in the problem. To introduce the students to the reading and commentary of key metaphysical texts. To introduce the students to the practice of reflection and metaphysical debate.

Content and teaching methods

The course is devoted to the thorough analysis of metaphysical questions.
Its content changes every time it is organised (the course is biennial).
The method it is using is to start from the reading and the commentary of
one or some texts concerning the selected subject, so as to come to a
discussion about it.

Pre-requisites:
Introductory metaphysics course.

Assessment:
The oral exam bears on a question raised in the course. The student, in collaboration with the lecturer, will choose a question and prepare an answer based on the lectures and on the complementary readings.
The exam is the presentation and discussion of the above.

Texts studied in class and indicated in a bibliography.
