Aims

To enable students to acquire a basic knowledge of the issue of gender, particularly in its relationship to questions of population, from a historical and north/south perspective.
To encourage students to reflect on the methodological plan (e.g. information systems and statistical indicators).

Main themes

- A general issue, history and importance of the concept, and recent definitions.
- Quantitative and qualitative systems of observing questions of gender.
- The most common instruments and indicators of analysis.
- The effects of gender relations on marriage rates and fertility.
- Gender relations, health and mortality.
- Gender relations, modes of production and migration.
- A report on current knowledge on relationship between gender and demography.
- Questions of gender in present-day demographic policies.

Assessment: This will take the form of a synthesis of reading and applied work.
