Aims
To introduce demographers to epidemiology and epidemiological tools, with particular attention being focused on aspects specific to each of the disciplines (i.e. epidemiology and demography) and to mutually complementary factors through a study of health phenomena (e.g. reproductive health and mortality).
To enable demographers to participate more effectively in actions and research relating to health.

- The objectives and strategies of health.
- An epidemiological model of illness and the concept of causality.
- Strategies for observation and research.
- Measuring frequency, effect and impact.
- Accuracy and validity.
- Case studies.
Content and teaching methods
A course of lectures, preferably given jointly by an epidemiologist and a demographer, or by a specialist in one of the subjects who has acquired a good understanding of the other. Through substantive examples (and other means), and a comparison between epidemiological tools and demographic tools with a view to establishing a language that is common to both subjects.

Assessment: A written examination.
Pre-requirement: Basic training in description statistics, statistical tests and demography.
