Aims
To give students a grounding in the history of population and the history of demography, and to impress on them the importance of long-term historical trends in terms of demography, and of the variety and interdependence of the development of the various components of the demographic dynamic.

A global history of the peopling of the planet; and case studies on particular periods in the history of the populations of some countries.
A history of the methods of demographic analysis and of the tenets of population.

Lectures.
A brief study of the history of the peopling of the world, with a closer focus on the more important "accidents". A detailed examination of the European demographic system since the 16th century. Specific characteristics of demographic history on other continents.
The birth and historical development of the scientific analysis tools of demographical situations. An overview of the main tenets of population.

Assessment: A dossier on a subject to be approved by the teacher.
