Aims
This course sets out to acquire a critical understanding of the issues of multi media journalism, and aims to give students the key skills for operating in the area of the media. The study is restricted to the exercise of a day to day journalistic function, and therefore excludes aspects of design and planning. The course follows a specialised logic, and is an extension of the Workshop on writing for the press (COMU2282).

An introduction to specific features of multi media journalism. An analysis of the main

the search for, and validation of, information;
writing, and the specific organisation of information;
intellectual property;
inter activity;
profitability.
An introduction to the practice of multi media journalism:
the completion of an 'online' press product in real time and in professional conditions;
the critical search for information;
working on the interface, and using databases.
Methodology
The first part of the course will be covered by illustrated lectures; the second part, which consists of practical exercises, will include ongoing critical assessments (individual or group), depending on the nature of the work being done.

Assessment: Students will have to do individual work based on a critical analysis of their
own output, and on existing 'online' press products. They will compare this output with
analytical and theoretical frameworks that were examined in the first part of the course. Assessment will take this work, and students' exercises. into account.
Support: An Intranet website will contain reference texts that will provide support during
the first part of the course, private study exercises and students' own work.
This course will require special supervision for the practical section.
