Aims
By the end of the course, students will be capable of:
providing a complete description of a publication using the scientific and technical terms generally used in French;
making up a DTP publication 'according to the rule book', and of justifying their choices against pre established data, particularly editorial policy and a target public;
describing, criticising and creating 'mediatising' graphics of numbered or structural
data.
Main themes
The course will train students in the formal analysis and graphic production of press
publications. It will include a presentation of the technical means used in informatic data processing when producing DTPs.
Content and teaching methods
Content
Part 1: Introduction to graphics
" A. Introduction to the development of the production technology of signs (letters) and
images, with a view to identifying the cultural factors of this technology.
" B. Data processing leading to a graphic presentation (e.g. diagrams, networks and letters).
" C. Introduction to an analysis and practice of graphics, for both paper and multi media supports.
Part 2: Graphics in the press
" A. Introduction to an analysis and practice of graphics in the press.
" B. Introduction to the use of DTP programs.
Methodology
" Analysis and comments based on examples taken from the press.
" Classroom exercises.
" On the basis of these analyses, the work asked of students will focus on making a
journalistic production.

Pre requirement: Part 1 of the course is Part B of the 'Communications writing workshop'.
Supervision: The substantial volume of on screen classroom exercises calls for IT resources (individual computers and software, which will be available to all students) and supervision from specialist Assistants.
