Aims
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Understand the emergence of different views of the city, in a field of tension between rupture and continuity.
Identify concepts belonging to modern architecture, take the measure of their ambitions in regard to urban and territorial projects, and develop elements of critical analysis.
Main themes
Following a brief summary of different manifestations of modernity, the course will review in a structured manner the major developments and upheavals in the constitution of urban structures.
The idea of the avant-garde and the various positions taken up at the beginning of the 20th century will be discussed, insofar as they relate to the relationship of architecture to the arts and to technology.
The search for collective forms of housing will be presented and analysed as an example of new ambitions for architecture, as well as new spatial objectives.
The course will take care to identify the major works of the modern movement and of critical counter-movements.
