Aims

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse specific teaching methodologies used in the teaching of art history and aesthetics; emphasis will be placed on the didactic methods particular to 20th century art.

Main themes

The seminar centres around a theoretical reflection analysing the problems related to artistic communication and aesthetic perception mechanisms, especially as concerns the evolution of fashions and taste. An overview is given of research in teaching techniques and their practical application on different education levels.

Content and teaching methods

Content
Study of the different questions related to the difficulties met in artistic perception and the impediments they present to learning (obstacles, pre-conceived ideas, problems of cultural heritage, evolution of criteria of appreciation,…). Bringing to light of the emergence of fundamental, diachronic questions in the face of 20th century art. Adaptation of approach techniques to various audiences, experimenting with procedures that heighten aesthetic awareness.
Methods
Practical assignments carried out by the students: experience in teaching institutions, inquiries in museums and art galleries, analysis of different education services and their public (problems related to reception, to the guided visits and, especially, didactic presentation of rooms).

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Assessment: Oral presentation of an assignment carried out in a museum with written preparation to be handed in. Discussion with the course holder on the portfolio produced by the student during the seminar.
Course Materials: Documents distributed during the seminar meetings.
