Aims

This course is a general introduction to the study of Art History and Archeology. By the end of the course, students should have a basic knowledge of the major trends, fields of activity, methods and resources in Art History and Archeology for the period concerned.

Main themes

The course teaches the historiography of Archeology and Art History, introducing the history of these two disciplines from Antiquity to the modern day, with a view to highlighting the main directions of former and current research. It provides a broad overview of Archeology, its methods and the main trends in interpretation, the different theories and sciences of Art and the main international institutions (academies, museums etc) and tools available for researchers in Archeology and Art History.

Content and teaching methods

The course is a general introduction to Archeology and Art History research, from Antiquity to the modern period. Historiography and heuristics. Insights into the organization of research, both at a national and international level, up to 1860.
