Aims

The course aims at developing the communication skills (mainly reading, listening and speaking) in order to enable the student to function in a social and professional context.

Reading Comprehension
- The student should be able to understand in detail direct and not so complex factual texts (articles, reports, …)
concerning with general and field-related subjects. o The student should be able to understand articles about
contemporary problems and they should be able to catch the position or the viewpoint of the author.

Listening Comprehension
Individual:
- The student should be able to understand a large part of expositions or television and radio programs on subjects
of general interest or on subjects related to the field of studies, provided that the language is of a standard level
and clearly pronounced and that the presentation is direct and simple.
- The student should be able to understand most TV news and current affairs programs.
Interactive:
- The student should be able to understand in detail what is said in an everyday conversation in standard language
on current affairs or subjects related to the field of studies.

Speaking Skills
Individual:
- The student should be able to present a short presentation of a subject of general interest or of a field-related
subject
Interactive:
- The student should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with
native speakers quite possible provided the subject is familiar or field-related.

Writing Skills:
- The student should be able to write a short personal letter, a short report or a short abstract
- The student should be able to write short factual and descriptive reports adding a short personal opinion.

Code:
Vocabulary:
broadening of the students' range of basic vocabulary. Grammar: consolidation of the command of the basic structures of the Dutch language, particularly those that cause problems for French speaking people)

Culture:
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.

Main themes

The course is oriented on the fields of social sciences. Based on authentic materials, the course is intended to develop the students' communicative competences (reading, listening, speaking) that are required in their academic work and in their future professional life.
Development of comprehensive skills (reading and listening) based on authentic documents (written and spoken) on subjects of general interest and on the specific field of studies.
The vocabulary, the structures and the oral communication skills are exercised and consolidated by means of written and oral production (role-plays, small debates, small presentations, …).

Content and teaching methods

NEER 1331 - intermediate level (second part)

- 60-hours course taught 2 hours a week throughout the academic year (90 hours course taught 3 hours a week
throughout the academic year for the students who followed only the elementary level in the first year of their
Bachelor's degree).
- Intended for the students SPOL 12 BA - 3 ECTS

Pre-requisites :
the student should have followed the course of intermediate level part 1 (NEER 1330) or a course of similar level (level B1 of the CEF for the reading and listening skills, B1- for the speaking skills and A2 for the writing skills)
Aims : B1 level of the CEF for the speaking skills (main objective).
B2- level of the CEF for the reading and listening skills and B1- level of the CEF for the writing skills.

Contents and pedagogical approach :
- vocabulary and grammar exercises
- listening and reading comprehension exercises.
- individual and interactive speaking exercises
- writing exercises (to some extent)
- texts and activities on subjects of general and field- related interest

Evaluation : continuous assessment, written and oral exam.

Requirements:
The student should have followed the course of intermediate level part 1 (NEER 1330) or a course of similar level. Students who have followed only the elementary level in BAC 1 have to take the 90 hours course (instead of the 60 hours course that is provided) in order to make up arrears and to be able to pass the exam of intermediate level by the end of the year. This remediation/relevelling of 45 hours (30 h. course and 15 h. self tuition) is made outside credits. (See. Bologna decree of the CFB).

Workload:
Classroom hours : 48 hours (+ 24 h. beyond ECTS for students who have followed the elementary level in BAC1)
Self-study : 24 hours (+ 15 h. beyond ECTS for students who have followed the elementary level in BAC 1)

Guidance:
Lessons in groups of max. 30 students
The teacher is available during his office-hour(s) and can be contacted by e-mail.
Guidance is also provided at the Self-tuition Centre (CAA) and the Multimedia Room (SMM).

Teaching material:
Course notes and material for self tuition: "Zelfstudie II" Audio- and videotapes used in the language laboratory.

Evaluation:
- Continuous assessment (summative and formative)
- Written exam
- Oral exam
