Content and teaching methods

2002-2003 :

The Song of Songs in the light of exegetical chains
This seminar is a prolongation of the course and will deal with patristic exegesis of the Song of Songs. We will demonstrate the interest of exegetical chains (particularly that by Procopius of Gaza, who is being edited at Louvain-la-Neuve) for our knowledge of the patristic tradition in the Greek language. Beginning there, we shall pass the principal patristic commentaries in review to shed light on the diversity of interpretations the Fathers proposed. Based on the specific case of the Canticle, we thus hope to make clear that exegesis cannot do without the history of exegesis. We will introduce students to philological work, particularly using textual data bases.
