Aims

Examination of a foreign (i.e. non-French-language) repertoire from the viewpoint of the poetics and aesthetics of the theatre.

Main themes

The study of a character, myth, dramaturgical trend, aesthetic school, genre or theme using selected works from the foreign repertoire. Examples from recent years have included: the divergent paths adopted by the theatre at the end of the 19th century in England, Germany and Scandinavia, studied via a character who takes on a new dimension and invades the stage at that time: that of the young woman; the representation of history on stage: from the plays of Shakespeare, inspired by historical chronicals, to the fragmented texts of Heiner Müller, and from grand fresco to the fragmented vision of history, the responses have been multiple, if not contradictory.

Content and teaching methods

Content: The content varies from year to year. It relates to the works of the standard repertoire and their stage productions, and draws on theatrical texts, theoretical writings and iconographic documents relating to the subjects considered.
Method: Teacher-led course and presentations by groups of students.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

An oral presentation lasting about half an hour and a file of 10-15 pages, to be handed in at the end of the course.
