Aims
To familiarise students with the "statistical approach" and the "probabilist approach"; and to give them practice in handing and interpreting tools of monovariate descriptive statistics and the elementary calculation of probabilities.
Main themes
The usefulness of statistics and the role of the statistician; the notion of statistical distribution; graphic representations of a statistical distribution; the parameters of the central tendency and dispersal; the concept of probability; basic theorems for calculating probabilities; and binomial and normal laws.
Correspondences between statistical parameters and demographic indicators.
Content and teaching methods
A lecture course.
There will be as intuitive a presentation as possible of the tools of univariate descriptive statistics; it will be illustrated by case studies based on real data.
An introduction to the calculation of probabilities, and to binomial and normal laws.
Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
Assessment: This will involve practical work paired with the assessments on Courses DEMO 3419 and DEMO 3480 for students working towards the DEMO 3 DS diploma, and on Course DVLP 3181 for students working towards the DVLP 3 DS diploma.
The course will be given over a period of 3-4 weeks at the beginning of the year.
Support: A syllabus.
