Aims

To develop the ability to identify social phenomena in the medium and long term.
To develop the ability to use the resources of history in sociological research.
To explain and overcome the contingencies that have determined the frequent opposition
between the two disciplines.

Main themes

The exact themes will vary, and will be chosen by agreement by the two teachers. Generally
speaking, they will concern social violence, and particular facets of it will be addressed each time.

Content and teaching methods

Methodology
The course has been designed so that students will be able to progress in such a way that
that they will end up integrating sociological and historical approaches themselves. It has
accordingly been divided into several parts:
1) as far as the chosen theme is concerned, a summary by students of the input of history
and sociology;
2) the students to choose a personal area of study from the reading lists supplied (this
choice will be the subject of a special interview with the teachers aimed at identifying the object and the methodology);
3) a day when students will present and discuss all their work (work will have been read
prior to the oral presentation; students will receive feedback at a second special interview).
